I would have to say that after recent football results, I am a bit of a "soccer Grinch".

I was all ready to release a wonderful piece of prose on how Liverpool had ascended to the top of their field through a new strategic vision .

Up until this week, they were executing their strategy effectively but, in an attempt to score mountains of goals per match, they were found wanting in defence.

A calamitous collapse Tuesday morning NZT (which ironically unfolded live on my phone while locked out of Wicksteed House) was the lowest moment of what has been a tremendously successful season.

The lesson in this is twofold.

Number one, if you are going to play this type of football you need defenders who can turn and defend when attacks break down. Secondly, you need to keep your head when things don't go according to plan (perhaps "parking the bus" like the London teams who aren't Arsenal do). Neither of these things happened.

These lessons can be applied to business. To concentrate on the first point, we need to ensure that we have the right skills on board to achieve the strategy we set for ourselves. If you are a training business, you wouldn't have your law teacher instructing business people on how to be effective in social media marketing without the necessary training. You would also test the person to ensure that, before they get in front of paying clients, they have the requisite skills. The same applies to all business activities - be it utilising new machinery, engaging in customer service or people transitioning from operational activities into management.

To this end, we offer training courses for people transitioning into management roles, in which attendees may be eligible for a 50 per cent discount on the total course fee. We take people through the foundational aspects of good management and the skills necessary to manage and lead teams effectively.

Just like a football coach trains his team to execute the game strategy, so too business people should have access to training and development which enables them to be effective in their roles.

When people are successful in business roles, it is important to look at what is behind these achievements - the things we do not see. The training, managed development, support - all are essential to success.

And, unlike Liverpool FC's performance this week, effective training and development can build the confidence to perform effectively at the highest level.

It's about putting ourselves and our people in the best position to be successful. If we do this effectively, it is more likely we and our team and business will perform.

In any endeavour, there will always be someone who is the best and invariably that person, team or business will be there because they have prepared themselves better than anyone else in their field. So when opportunity presents itself to develop skills, your team will benefit from effective training and your business will be more likely to achieve its goals.

For Liverpool, I recommend a similar offering. A more effective training regime delivered by a specialist - my contact details are below:
