The group also identified the need to add more information on local writer and actress Loren Horsley as well as getting Wanganui featured status on the WikiProject New Zealand table.
The group was set up by Whanganui Regional Museum's curator of natural history Mike Dickison with the goal of filling the gaps on information about the region.
Mr Dickison says there are many gaps and omissions in the Wanganui entries and it would be great to get a number of people involved as there is a lot of work to be done.
"People can come along and learn the basics of editing Wikipedia and anyone who has an interest in local history and events is very welcome.
"We have identified a number of pages that should be there - the Sarjeant Gallery has only a brief entry and the museum doesn't even have a page.
"One thing I want to do, for instance, is list all the former mayors of Wanganui because a lot of them are not there."
Mr Dickison said that many potential visitors would be looking at Wikipedia as a first point of reference and it would be much more attractive to them if they could find extensive and up-to-date information.
"It's the first Google result for just about everything and will continue to be. It's a super-important thing and people have kind of ignored that fact."
Anyone can edit and amend Wikipedia which is why Mr Dickison wishes to get Wanganui people involved to ensure entries are accurate.
"The Pakaitore page is really important and it is a challenge because people still have really strong feelings about the occupation of Motua Gardens and Wikipedia entries must be very fair and balanced. That is why it is so important that Wanganui people are involved."
Help is available for new members, and they can bring their own computers or use those at the library.
