WANGANUI police last night were still trying to establish who fired shots from a high-powered firearm into a Keith St house about 1.30am yesterday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Bensemann said a number of shots were fired into the front of the house where a family and their extended family were at that time.
No one was injured in the shooting, but the occupants were very shaken up by it, he said.
The house is in Glasgow-Liverpool block of Keith St. Police were alerted to the shooting by the family and public.
Mr Bensemann said it wasn't known if one or more people were involved in the shooting. The bullets had been retrieved, and the evidence at this stage was that only one firearm was used.
"We believe the shots came from a vehicle and don't believe it was a random attack, but we have yet to establish a motive."
The shooting was not connected to any recent events in the area. The occupants at the house were helping police with their inquiries and residents in the street also were being spoken to.
"We would like to hear from anyone who may have heard or seen a vehicle or person acting suspiciously in the area or anyone who may have information to help solve the case. All information will be treated as confidential," Mr Bensemann said.
