The Prime Minister has hit the campaign trail just four days after announcing this year's
election date, and has already begun cosying up to babies.
Prime Minister John Key got up close and personal with the young faces that will one day fill Endeavour Primary School.
Officials, parents and future students gathered at the Flagstaff site yesterday as Mr Key turned the first sod before construction of Hamilton's newest school got under way.
Mr Key said it was a great beginning for the youngsters and was pleased to be part of the first steps of the school.
"This is going to be home to 400 students, 600 in time. This is a sign of a community that is strong - the heart of what makes New Zealand strong."
