The 14 teams make up the Super 14 (as the title suggests) come from North Harbour, Auckland, Waitakere, Hamilton centres and Counties Manukau centres cluster. Each centre has three teams entered except Waitakere who only had two.
For North Harbour, Auckland, Waitakere and Hamilton centres the teams that finished first to third in the relevant premier competition in 2015 had automatic right of entry for 2016. The Counties Manukau centres cluster teams were determined by regional premier league results for 2015.
The teams were divided into two pools with pool A consisting of College Rifles, Panmure, Collegiate, Waitakere City Rugby Netball Club (WCRN), Manurewa Rugby, University Prem and Verdettes Marist. Pool B consisted of Phoenix Prem, Aztec, Southern Cavaliers, Baytex, Commodores, Shore Rovers and MAGS Capil.
Pools games started on February 26 with the seventh and final pool game played on April 15. This saw the top of pool A, University Prem play second in pool B, Southern Cavaliers and the top of pool B, Phoenix Prem play second in pool A Collegiate.
The semi-finals were played on Saturday across two indoor venues -- St Pauls Collegiate and Waikato Diocesan School in Hamilton.
