The Waikato is set to make history by hosting the very first powerchair football tournament in New Zealand.
The Tichemja Trust Activ8 Powerchair Football tournament will take place at Cambridge High School on July 30, with the first game starting at 11am. Spectators are invited to attend the free, all-day event.
SportsForce Parafed development officer Carol Armstrong said Parafed Waikato Powerchair Football team is proud to host the first tournament in New Zealand.
Powerchair football is a fast-paced game played in power-operated wheelchairs, indoors on a hard wooden surface. The athletes who participate require the use of a chair for mobility due to conditions or impairments such as muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy and spinal cord injuries. The game requires skill, pace, tactics and control.
"Although the sport has been active in other regions it has not been physically possible to create a tournament until now," Carol said.
