Retired Hamilton City Councillor Peter Bos is reaching out to the community to bring recognition to the buglers of Ieper this Anzac Day.
Mr Bos was made an honorary member of the Last Post Association in a service held at Hamilton City Council offices earlier this month but said it's the story of Ieper (also known as Ypres) that really deserves recognition.
"It's not about me, it's about the buglers that have played The Last Post every single night for the last 85 years, and it's about letting our young people know what happened," said Mr Bos.
The Last Post is played daily by the buglers in honour of the memory of the soldiers of the former British Empire and its allies, who died in the Ypres Salient during World War 1.
Ieper occupied a strategic position during World War 1 because it stood in the path of Germany's planned sweep across the rest of Belgium and into France from the north (the Schlieffen Plan). The neutrality of Belgium was guaranteed by Britain; Germany's invasion of Belgium brought the British Empire into the war. The German army surrounded the city on three sides, bombarding it throughout much of the war.
