A Night Out with Marc Moore

Who doesn't love taking a peek behind the fashion industry's closed doors? When New Zealand singer Ladyhawke performed an exclusive underground gig to "a clash of fashion people, art folk and music industry insiders", Marc Moore of Stolen Girlfriends Club captured the action on his Samsung Galaxy S7.

“It was great to get my hands on the new Samsung device - I’d heard really good things about the new low-light camera so was super keen to try it out.

I’ve had this life of struggling to capture good photos at gigs - always so frustrating trying to take a good photo on your mobile. The lights always changing and it’s usually really dark - resulting in blurry/grainy pics.”

The private party, held at Stolen Girlfriends Club's headquarters, was the latest in a series of secret pop-up gigs the label has organised. “We have them when there's a really cool artist in town,” Marc, the brand's creative director, explains.

The LA-based Ladyhawke, aka Pip Brown, was here for the Auckland City Limits festival, and jumped at the chance to perform at a more intimate venue.

“She wanted to do a showcase to friends and family, because she's got a new album out soon.”

It's not the first time the brand has worked with the artist, who is also a friend – most recently they designed a T-shirt and bespoke leather jacket for her new album, entitled Wild Things.

“I was amazed at how good the low-light camera was! It was insane. I took so many pics of Pip when she was performing, the light just looked so cool, and the best thing was that my pics were in focus – haha, love it!”

Ladyhawke's epic performance resulted in a typical rowdy night for the Stolen crew, with guests partying until 4am. During dancing breaks, they sipped Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and Kronenburg, and queued up for cocktails. They crowded around the only fan, Marc laughs, as it was so hot and sweaty in the crowded space.

There were a few familiar faces in the invite-only crowd, including Pip's wife, actress Madeleine Sami, and model Zippora Seven and her filmmaker boyfriend Terence Connors, who were in town from New York City.

In the lead up to the show, the Stolen team spent the day turning their office into a makeshift venue, decorating it with silver tinsel curtains, requisite disco ball and custom lighting. They also set up two bars and brought in stage and sound equipment.

“It was pretty full on actually,” Marc remembers. “There's quite a bit of time involved in making the space look nice. We cleared out the whole office and turned it into an underground club for the night.”

The “under the radar” events used to be monthly, but Marc found that diminished the hype. “We'll give it a few months to settle so everyone gets excited again. We're going to look at the touring schedule for July, we might be able to tack on someone really cool then.”
