For a day at the beach or by the pool, any SPF 15+ sunscreen that's around the house will do. But my daily moisturiser, Olay Complete Day Cream with SPF15, is regular and simple sun protection that has, happily, become a habit. $10 from supermarkets.

Murad Oil-Free Sunscreen SPF 30. A great matte variety for the face, light but effective. If I'm wearing foundation over the top I don't feel like I'm drowning in product. Not cheap, but a little goes a long way. $54 from Murad.co.nz and Caci clinics.

The tube of Triumph & Disaster 'No Dice' Sunscreen at home rightfully belongs to my partner, but this sunblock is wonderfully non-greasy. It has a light texture  that absorbs easily into your skin and the scent is subtle. The fact that it is 87 per cent natural is a great bonus. $55 from triumphanddisaster.com

I struggle with sunscreens, trying to balance my hatred of chemicals with being cancer smart. This season, I'm quite happy to wear my Karen Walker huge oversized hat every day. When that's not appropriate, I will use Coolah sunscreen. On my lily-white children I use Invisible Zinc Junior on their faces and Badger sunscreen everywhere else. Coola SPF 30 sunscreen, $50.

If I can't find any Hawaiian Tropic,  my other favourite would be No Dice by Triumph & Disaster. It's non-greasy and doesn't have that strong odour you get from other sunscreens.
