Each day this week our fashion team will look closely at key garments of the season and tell you the story behind them.

Yes everyone harps on about classics, but you really can’t look past a cable-knit sweater. It’s the type of wardrobe item that nods to preppy college students and salty maritime adventures. This season, key cable-knit piece comes from Twenty-seven Names, a label whose archive reads like the wardrobe of a student from the Seven Sisters alumni; polished preppy pieces that stand the test of time. Aptly called the “Yale” cable-knit sweater, designers Rachel Easting and Anjali Stewart describe it as being one of their favourite pieces of the season.

“I love cable-knits. There's nothing like wearing a really cosy knit in winter,” explains Easting. “I wear mine practically every day. I love this garment because it's made to the highest possible standard, it's 100 per cent soft merino wool, and it's proudly made in New Zealand.”

Available in an oatmeal colour and this beautiful blue, it’s a piece that can be worn with a tailored skirt for the office or perhaps the Twenty-seven Names faded blue “Rebecca” jeans as styled in their look book. The best way to take care of this beauty is to hand wash gently in cool water and lay flat to dry; never on a hanger.
