Auckland-based artist and sock-maker Ophelia Mikkelson made her first pair of linen socks last autumn on a Japanese knitting machine. “I started making them because I really don’t like being cold ... socks seemed like a good solution.”
Today she launches her online store, which will offer a range of colourful summer socks, which you may have spotted all over Instagram.
Coming soon, she will also sell ribbed linen T-shirts with an added personal touch the labels are her own leftover school uniform tags.
“You have to buy woven name tags in bulk, so in primary school I had tags made to sew into my uniform. I didn’t use very many of them but I always liked them,” she explains. “I’m using the rest now, 20 years later, sewing them into the T-shirts to label them.”
