Fashion designer James Dobson was so impressed with student Sarah Kim’s jewellery which she made as part of a project at MIT School of Visual Arts that he asked her to put the designs into production to sell at his store. Second year students in the institute’s Jewellery Design and Production course were tasked with creating pieces to complement his fashion label Jimmy D’s latest collection, On a Wing and a Beer.
James says he was impressed with all the interpretations of the brief, but that Sarah’s pieces looked completely resolved and had an immaculate finish.
“One of the main elements in the collection is this fabric print of chicken wings dripping in hot sauce,” says James. “Sarah took this idea of dripping and created two studs each with different drips. They are quite refined and delicate but quite humorous at the same time.”
Sarah says it took a considerable amount of time and effort to file and carve the shape to create the illusion of movement.
