Rose-gold tinted mirrors, a bluestone marble counter and pelmet lighting projecting on to clothing are the types of things typically seen in luxury department stores like Barneys New York and now in the new flagship store from young local label Harman Grubisa, on Ponsonby’s Jervois Rd.

For any brand, least of all Harman Grubisa, which is less than a year old, opening a first shop is no small feat and Madeleine Harman (left) and Jessica Grubisa, the design duo behind the brand, don’t do anything by halves. “There are always ways to cut corners and produce something simple but we have kind of pushed the boat out to produce something unique,” says Harman.

They have collaborated on a colour palette for the interior and exterior of the building with Resene, using colours like “Truffle” and “Half Cake” with the aim of restoring the character of the 1930s building, which previously housed Taylor Boutique for over a decade.

A key inspiration was Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen's The Row store in Los Angeles. Harman and Grubisa have installed an Italian Poliform wardrobe system and an Italian Flos pendant light above the counter, creating a space with a modern and sophisticated feel. And their workroom is upstairs, so the designers will be never be too far from the shop floor.

• The Harman Grubisa flagship store opens on Friday at 20 Jervois Rd, Ponsonby. Ph (09) 963 6129.
