A Karen Walker capsule collection to mark the 90th anniversary of Mickey Mouse comes as a happy surprise. The collection coincides with an international rollout of Disney designer collaborations including Marc Jacobs, Opening Ceremony and Jeremy Scott's collection for Moschino and H&M.
“Mickey’s a global icon and it’s a great honour for me to have an opportunity to interpret his personality, which I’ve loved since meeting him at Disneyland as a 7-year-old,” says Karen.
“Mickey and Minnie represent adventure and whimsy and that’s very much what our Runaway Girl stands for; going forth, always with a sense of fun. As soon as we started talking about a collaboration with Disney, I thought, ‘what if we let Mickey and Minnie use our bindle?’ I could picture them both in profile, marching into the world with the stick and bindle over their shoulders.”
It’s the first time the Runaway Girl motif has been altered since it debuted at London Fashion Week 17 years ago. The range is available globally from today, and includes jumpers and T-shirts featuring Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald toting bindles. But it’s the whimsical eyewear that’s particularly got our attention.
A one-off Disney pop-up store will open at Playpark by Karen Walker from today, featuring the full Disney x Karen Walker collection, and a curation of other 90th birthday collaborative collections, ranging from footwear, hats and watches to stationery, oven mitts and egg cups.
