Olivia, a Kiwi expat now living in New York, is the senior features editor at Harper's Bazaar online, and founder of Olivia Kane jewellery. She's an avid road tripper having recently travelled across America and Cuba.

Where did you last travel?I just returned from a two-week road trip from Washington to California. My friend Molly and I picked up a 1978 Mercedes in Seattle and drove it the longest way possible home to its rightful owner in LA. We passed through Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Nevada before circling back to California. Before that I was in Cuba for another mini road trip.

Where in the world have you felt happiest?New Zealand. Tawharanui or Karekare specifically but really any beach at home!

Where is your favourite city?Milan. Aperitivo, gelato, pasta, wine and well-dressed men, what more do you need?

Describe the most breathtaking view you have ever seen. The Marlborough Sounds as you enter Picton.

Do you have any packing secrets to share?Leave enough room for the special pieces you pick up along the way.

What are your suitcase essentials?T-shirts, jeans, togs, a cashmere jumper and a dress. A good book, a notepad and a solar-powered battery charger.

Where did you go on your first holiday without your parents? Waiheke Island when I was 6 with my best friend from primary school.

Your worst travelling memory?Travelling is never perfect and embracing strange experiences or stressful situations will more often than not lead to an extra dose of magic.

What would you most like to find in your minibar?Water and American cold brew.

How do you relax? In New York, by escaping Upstate to swimming holes or a hike in the Catskills.
