A new exhibition by celebrated New Zealand photographer Russ Flatt focuses on a body of work that re-imagines Flatt’s experiences as an adolescent competitive roller skater in the 80s, and alludes to present day discussions around Flatt’s identification as a Maori gay man. With a compelling blend of personal memories, the exhibition highlights several genres and points of views, mixing his experience in commercial photography with more photo journalistic moods to combine personal memories with fiction. The series is captured at Skateland in Mt. Wellington and examines and amplifies the unique dynamic between subject, camera and audience in his re-imagined world.
