Performance art doyenne Marina Abramovic has touched down in Australia for a 12-day residency on Sydney Harbour.
The Serbian-born, New-York based artist made headlines in 2010 for her The Artist is Present performance at the Museum of Modern Art in New York where she sat still in a chair for hours on end gazing into the eyes of gallery-goers sitting directly opposite her.
Named last year as one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential people, Abramovic is also a close friend of Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci, who designs many of her performance outfits.
The revered artist is in Sydney for Marina Abramovic: In Residence, a Kaldor Public Art Project at Piers 2/3 in Walsh Bay. Visitors to the free exhibition are encouraged to slow down and immerse themselves in being present with activities include counting grains of rice and sitting and staring into the eyes of a facilitator.
The pop-up Sydney show is running alongside a major retrospective of Abramovic’s four-decade-long career at Hobart’s Museum of Old and New Art.
