1. Go to an art exhibition
Art galleries are the perfect place to kill a few hours while escaping the wet weather, as well as educating yourself on the New Zealand and international art scene. Make a trip to your city centre's main gallery, or do some research and find one close to your house.

2. See a movie
As well as the usual big name players, there are also plenty of independently-owned cinemas dotted around the country to catch a flick. There are also great special cinema events coming up, including the International Film Festival, which is held at various locations around New Zealand.

3. Take a dip
Swimming doesn't have to be reserved for summer - head to your local hot springs for a relaxing and warm night or daytime dip.

4. Watch a production
Support the arts and book a play, show or comedy gig - there's never a shortage of local productions on, or enjoy a renowned international performance.

5. Host a dinner party
Round-up a few friends and put on a feast, or make it a pot luck if you want to lessen your dishes load. A few glasses of mulled wine will certainly warm things up, too.

6. Go for a walk
There's nothing like a crisp winter day to set out for a walk, and you won't heat up as much as on a hot summer's day.

7. Binge read a book
Similar to binge watching, but good for you. There's no better time to make yourself a warming drink and cocoon with a classic read than in midst of dreary winter.

8. Put on your skates
Although not as prevalent as in the Northern Hemisphere, ice skating is a fun excuse to wrap up and head out. The Aotea Square Ice Rink will be back in Auckland from June 17, or visit your local indoor rink.

9. Create something
Paint an abstract picture, make a short film of your cat, try your hand at creative writing or make use of that colouring in book you got for Christmas.
