Breakouts are the bane of many teenagers lives, but adults are increasingly troubled by skin sensitivities leading to eruptions. Get on top of problems early by taking sensible preventive and treatment steps and avoid overly harsh scrubbing and, needless to say, squeezing. For truly nasty acne it is best to seek professional advice as you may benefit from a medical prescription. Try your GP or head straight to a dermatologist. Skin clinics can also offer good advice for day-to-day concerns and tips on what ingredients to look for if you are buying products. Murad brand expert and trainer Linda Sharrem shares five ways you can make a difference.
1. Clear and Cleanse
Acne-prone skin can benefit from a double cleansing, especially if you wear a lot of makeup. The first clean breaks down makeup, excess oil and dirt, while the second cleans skin and allows active ingredients to penetrate. The most effective way to treat and prevent congested pores is to ensure you're removing the dead skin cells, as any build-up of bacteria leads to breakouts. A product that uses alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) is a great option. A BHA such as salicylic acid works beneath the surface of the skin to break down dead cell build, alleviating clogged pores and blackheads. Sharrem recommends Murad's Clarifying Cleanser, $53, followed by its AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser, $68.
2. Moisturise
It is important to hydrate the skin after cleansing to balance out the hydration levels. Yes, even oily skin needs hydration (your skin will try to make more oils if you don't!) but nothing too heavy. An oil-free mattifying hydrator can moisture and matte the skin for up to eight hours, while also reducing shine. Try Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15, $85.
3. Treat the congestion and spots
The best way to treat clogged pores and prevent blackheads and breakouts is to treat the congestion before it becomes visible. Choose a pore treatment that uses salicylic acid, which helps to break down the sebum congestion under the skin in the pores, and also treats the spots at the same time. Try Murad Acne Spot Treatment, $40.
4. Ask the experts
At-home care is great but teaming it with a professional treatment is a good way to combat acne and congested pores. Facials with advanced exfoliation treatments can help gently resurface the skin by removing dead skin cells, thereby reducing surface congestion and encouraging circulation which results in improved skin health. In order to get the best results, regular treatments every four to six weeks are recommended.
5. Eat well:
A diet rich in antioxidant-rich fresh fruits and vegetables will help keep your skin healthy, and as an additional benefit may help to get rid of acne. While you should get the bulk of your nutrients from natural food sources, supplements can be considered.
