The University of Otago has become the first university in New Zealand to sign on as a major sponsor of a Super Rugby franchise. The deal between the university and the Highlanders was announced at Forsyth Barr Stadium yesterday afternoon. Many of the Highlanders staff and players have studied at Otago, and both organisations feel the partnership will be beneficial.
New Zealand’s five Investec Super Rugby teams fired up their engines and headed for the starting line of this year’s Investec Super Rugby season at the official competition launch in Auckland. Investec Super Rugby officially kicks off in South Africa this weekend, with the New Zealand teams getting their 2014 campaigns under way next weekend. The Crusaders host the defending champion Chiefs at AMI Stadium, and the Highlanders host the Blues in Dunedin. The Hurricanes, as they have for the past two seasons, open their campaign on the road, starting in Durban against the Sharks.
