Search for missing Mt Maunganui boy

The search for a 5-year-old boy swept into the ocean at Mt Maunganui will continue at first light today, with police vowing to do everything possible to recover him. The Tauranga youngster was playing with two cousins, sisters aged 12 and 14, on the water's edge at Shelly Beach when the three of them were swept into the sea by a large wave just before noon yesterday. The sisters scrambled on to rocks and were dragged ashore by two adult relatives shortly after. The little boy, who could not swim, disappeared.

Flight crew involved in horse float crash

Two people were hurt, one critically, after two vehicles collided in Canterbury today.One person was believed to be in a critical condition and another was seriously injured, police said. One vehicle was towing a horse float. The horse was believed to be uninjured. The police serious crash unit is at the scene and diversions are in place. A Singapore Airlines spokeswoman confirmed that some staff were involved in the crash.

Raw: Protesters disrupt oil industry speech

Greenpeace protesters have disrupted a petroleum conference being held in Auckland this morning, bursting into a room while Energy Minister Simon Bridges was speaking. About half a dozen women breached tight security and lobbed high pitched noise emitting devices under the seats. They were then bundled out of the room by a team of security staff and unfurled banners disputing Statoil's exploration programme in Northland. The women were dressed in business suits and had apparently faked identification and conference credentials to get into the room.

Labour is likely to head into its leadership contest within 6-8 weeks rather than wait for a review of the party's performance to report back in December-- and after an initial flurry of snipes, new interim leader David Parker said he expected it to be "seemly". Labour's caucus met this morning and its former leader David Cunliffe resigned while David Parker was elevated from deputy leader to acting leader with Annette King as his deputy.
