Mood of the Boardroom 2012: Superannuation - Raise the age?

Fran O'Sullivan, Executive Editor of the Mood of the Boardroom delivers her report probing the views from CEO's of New Zealand's major companies in association with BusinessNZ. A major topic of hot debate is Superannuation & the issue of raising the age from 65 to 67. Eighty-eight percent of more than 100 CEOs surveyed said retirement funding should be raised. Business leaders were told in no uncertain terms that the Prime Minister would not break his word by raising the superannuation age. Speaking at the Mood of the Boardroom breakfast, Finance Minister Bill English responded to calls from CEOs for National to reconsider its position on super. However, Labour's finance spokesperson David Parker believes the age should be raised but disagrees on the terms of means based assessments.

Labradors graduate for biosecurity protection

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has the first four labradors from a new MPI breeding programme graduate from the training programme on 20 July. It is the first time that MPI has used labradors for biosecurity protection. The new detector dogs will demonstrate their skills at finding goods carried by passengers and inside mail that pose a biosecurity risk to New Zealand. MPI expects to see new 11 dogs graduate from training this year - part of a move to bolster New Zealand's biosecurity defences.

News that all 28 miners trapped by a fire inside a a Waihi Gold underground mine have been successfully rescued is a "huge relief" for their families, says Hauraki District Mayor John Tregidga. He said he was "absolutely delighted'' that the miners have been evacuated safely but there are still questions about what caused the emergency. An investigation has been launched into the fire inside the mine after rescuers successfully evacuated all 28 trapped miners. A truck engine caught fire in Newmont Waihi Gold's Trio underground mine at about 5am, leaving the men trapped in three refuge chambers.

Parts of Auckland were hit by surface flooding this afternoon, as a severe thunderstorm rolled through the region. High winds caused disruptions in Auckland City, the Fire Service dealt with dozens of reports of flooding and power was cut to hundreds this afternoon.
