A man who captured dramatic footage of a police officer shooting at a shark which killed a man at Muriwai Beach has hailed the efforts of police and surf life savers. Adam Strange, 46, was killed by the shark while swimming at the popular West Auckland beach yesterday afternoon. Nigel Bradbury was at the beach with his daughter when the attack occurred.
A man swimming between Maori Bay and Muriwai Beach has been attacked and killed by a shark. Police confirmed that they shot and hit the shark, believed to be a great white, but said it swam away. The beaches along the west coast are closed.
A woman remains in a critical condition in Auckland Hospital after being hit by a freight train on the crossing in Morningside just after 9am yesterday. Disability strategic advisory group chair Huhana Hickey said, "the local community has been up in arms about the crossing even after its apparent upgrade in 2011". "It's the busiest railway crossing, so they [Auckland Transport and Kiwirail] knew all this; they knew something would happen. Do we have to wait for this poor women to die before anything will happen?" A woman in an electric wheelchair suffered serious injuries after she was struck by a train in Auckland this morning. The westbound freight train hit the woman and another person at a level crossing in Morningside about 9.05am. Police said the wheelchair-bound woman was taken to Auckland Hospital with serious injuries, while the other person suffered minor injuries. Shocked witnesses watched as the motorised wheelchair got stuck on the level crossing.

Two people are in hospital after they fled from police and crashed in Huia Rd, Otahuhu late last night. Police tried to stop the car just before 11.30pm in Otahuhu for high speeds when it took off. It crashed shortly after, injuring both occupants.

A large scrub fire in a Wellington suburb which threatened 30 houses and forced the evacuation of up to 70 residents was under control this morning. Fire Service assistant area manager for Wellington Brett Lockyer said the blaze overnight covered about 50 hectares in Happy Valley. About 30 houses had to be evacuated as the fire threatened to spread.
Crews aboard an anti-whaling protest ship in the Southern Ocean have escaped injury but are struggling to mend "significant damage" to their vessel after it was rammed by Japanese whalers. Two protest ships belonging to anti-whaling organisation Sea Shepherd were hit by Japanese whale-processing factory ship, Nisshin Maru. The boats, Steve Irwin and Bob Barker, have been following the vessel in the Southern Ocean to try to prevent the slaughter of whales.

Hundreds of teachers declared a motion of no confidence in Ms Parata at a rally inside a packed CBS Canterbury Arena after the school bell this afternoon. The teachers, joined by parents and pupils, then marched on the local Ministry of Education office to deliver the message.
