Jock Paget wins Badminton

Jonathan Paget has won the Badminton horse trials in a thrilling finish which came down to the final rail. The 29-year-old becomes only the second New Zealander to win the prestigious event after Sir Mark Todd, with fellow Kiwi Andrew Nicholson finishing third. Paget went into the show jumping round in second place needing a clear round on Clifton Promise and hoping that the leader Michael Jung dropped at least one rail.

Three newborn cheetah cubs are fighting for their lives, and workers at Christchurch zoo believe the cubs' mother may have eaten two of their siblings. First time cheetah mother Mazza gave birth to a litter of at least five at Orana Wildlife Park on Saturday afternoon. Zoo staff watched the births first unfold on CCTV, and think they may have seen Mazza eating two of her new babies. They raced to the cheetah enclosure to rescue the three surviving cubs.

St Clair Beach was bombarded by monsters from the deep yesterday evening. The seawall at the Esplanade shook from the impact of 2m waves, which were breaking 50m offshore and sending spray 20m into the air. Seawater covered the 6m-wide walkway and nearly reached the road. Bad weather didn't stop hundreds from attending the national Anzac Day commemorative service in central Wellington. Some perched in trees to watch the ceremony at the National War Memorial and hear tributes paid to fallen soldiers as dignitaries, ambassadors and officials sheltered under their programmes from pounding rain and gusty winds. Governor-General Lieutenant General Sir Jerry Mateparae, Prime Minister John Key, Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown and Labour MP Iain Lees-Galloway were among those to attend. They, along with foreign dignitaries and officials laid wreaths at the memorial. Sir Jerry said New Zealanders had served beside Australian allies for 98 years.

Floods: Nelson residents assess damage

Residents from Richmond, Nelson began the clean up after the area was soaked with torrential rain fall causing flash floods. Authorities estimate at least 90 homes in the Tasman District have had some flood inundation as a result of the heavy rain over the past 24 hours. Nelson-Tasman Region Emergency Management Group said building inspectors were checking properties that had been affected. Forecast for the Nelson area is expected to receive more heavy rain over the next 24 hours.

Gutter Black: Dave McArtney

Dave McArtney, a founding member of pioneering New Zealand rock band Hello Sailor, has died at home in Auckland. He was 62. McArtney rose to prominence after founding Hello Sailor in 1975 with onetime schoolmate Lyon and frontman Graham Brazier, singles included the classic Gutter Black. The song, with its punchy beat and high vocal was written and sung by McArtney - under the working title Sickness Benefit - and had a second life as the theme to hit television series Outrageous Fortune.
