A 3-week-old baby remains in a critical condition with life-threatening injuries following an incident at her Invercargill home yesterday. Inspector Olaf Jensen, of Invercargill, confirmed the parents were in the house at the time of the incident, and police were not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident. Several neighbours reported hearing noises from the property early yesterday morning. Emergency services were called to the Princes St home at 5.30am.

Mighty River: Shares up as profit rises

Mighty River Power shares rose nearly 2 per cent in early trading after announcing a profit well above prospectus forecasts and close to 70 per cent more than last year. Chairwoman Joan Withers said the shares had been hit by a " perfect confluence of elements" including ongoing uncertainty about fundamental changes to the electricity market promised by opposition political parties, increased interest rates paid on long term bonds and uncertainty about Tiwai Point aluminium smelter although recently there was now more clarity about demand by the country's biggest single electricity user. When the share market opened shares rose 4c to $2.23. The company said it will pay a final dividend of 7.2 cents a share on September 30 for those who hold shares on September 11.

The families of Trevor Waite and Glenys Stanton have appealed for their killer to come forward. Mr Waite's good family friend Ivan Gillatt spoke on behalf of the father of three's family. He said Mr Waite was a caring and kind man who was devoted to his family. "Anyone that knew Trevor, knew he could be trusted," he said. He said Mr Waite's family were devastated but had a lot of support from family and friends. Ms Stanton's brother in law John Kenyon described her as bubbly and sociable. "She lived life to the full. Unfortunately her life was cut short," he said. Both men urged whoever was responsible for the deaths or anyone with information to come forward.
