Drunk driver crashes into bar

Emergency services are at the corner of Great South Road and East Tamaki Road in Papatoetoe where a Holden Commodore car has crashed into a Bar. Several people have been injured including one man who has been taken to hospital with serious head injuries. Other have been treated by ambulance staff at the scene. Traffic lights were knocked over in the crash, exposing live wires. After the crash a fight is reported to have broken out between occupants of the car and bar patrons. Police have made several arrests. At the time of the crash Police were taking a 111 call from a member of the public concerned at the speed the car was travelling.

All 12 charges laid against former Pike River Coal boss Peter Whittall in relation to the 2010 disaster at the mine which killed 29 men have been dropped. Instead, Mr Whittall and Pike River Coal have offered a voluntary payment on behalf of the directors and officers of the company to the families of the men and two survivors, in what has been described as "blood money" by one widow.

Man killed in train and car collision

A man was killed when a train and car collided northwest of Auckland this morning. The collision occurred beside State Highway 16, Waimauku, at the Joyce Adams Place crossing about 10.20am. The car has collided with a freight train on a level crossing. As a result the 73 year-old driver of the car died at the scene. The man was the sole occupant of his vehicle.

The parents of a missing Australian tennis coach believe their son is still alive and have made a desperate plea for help from the public to find him. Sam and Richelle Arber travelled from Melbourne to join the search for 38-year-old Paul Arber, who they said was acting uncharacteristically the night before he left Australia to bring a group of teenage tennis players to Hamilton for a tournament. "We feel he's still alive somewhere," Mr Arber said. "We have a gut feeling he is but we don't know where he is and we'd like the public to try and help us."
