The United States Defence Department temporarily cut off public access to most of its websites yesterday to ensure they are protected against the "Code Red" internet virus, a Pentagon spokeswoman said.
Technicians were working to determine whether security patches needed to fix the problem had been installed, said Lieutenant-Colonel Catherine Abbott.
The "Code Red" virus, technically a self-propagating worm, first surfaced last week, and since then at least 300,000 sites had been infected.
