Welcome to InBox, where we attempt to answer your internet questions.
"Your current security settings prohibit running Active X controls on this page. As a result, this page may not display correctly" pops up when Ross tries to open one of his incoming e-mails in Outlook Express.
That's built into the design of the latest patched versions of Outlook Express, Ross. Microsoft created that message to warn you that a worm (the Wscript.KakWorm) might be hidden within the e-mail active component. Delete the offending e-mail and do not change your security settings (unless you are positive it is not a threat). See Microsoft Support and search for item Q291387 on security settings.
More on Graham's defragging woes from last time. Mark and Gary, among others, have also struck problems.
Last year, Pete Sinclair recommended a program called Power Defrag, which runs efficiently. Get a switched-on alternate to the Windows utility at Power Defrag. Follow up: Gary downloaded Power Defrag and a two-hour defrag now takes 30 minutes.
Bob asks a time-zone query: "I would like to set up, on my desktop, the current time in say New York, Los Angeles and Perth as well as New Zealand. Is there a program for this?"
Try WorldTime, Bob. It's available as a freeware download and allows up to ten configurable desktop clocks. It suits Win98 or later.
Hacker spotted. Allen's Firewall software recently denied seven port scans from an Xtra dial-up address. They involved ports 2124, 1243, 27374 and 6667. He asks what he should do.
E-mail abuse@xtra.co.nz immediately, Allen. Detail the situation and attach any relevant logs from your Firewall software. They will easily trace the offender and deal with him/her, as most of those ports are well documented targets for hackers.
"The spell check feature is non-existent in Outlook Express," complains Gayle.
Outlook Express relies on other Microsoft programs, such as any component of MS Office, to provide it. Install an MS program with spell check to gain it.
"Exception 0E has occurred" is the dreaded message Stuart is getting intermittently.
Check Infinisource, Stuart, where quite a few of these 0E (zero E) messages are listed.
