KEY POINTS:
Apple has announced that the wafer-thin MacBook Air is now shipping.
But a spokesman for the company says Kiwis wanting the highly desirable new laptop will have to wait until 'sometime in February'.
The 'world's thinnest laptop' measures just over 4mm at its skinniest point, and just under 2cm at its deepest.
It will retail in New Zealand for a hefty $2999, although some web-based sellers are offering it for less.
Whether the machine's specification versus the pricetag will attract serious laptop buyers remains to be seen, but there is little doubt that it will be a sought after fashion accessory.
Apple policy is not to comment on pre-release demand for its products.
Other models in the range include the entry-level MacBook, starting at $1848, and the fully-equipped MacBook Pro, from $3399
The Macbook Air has a 13.3-inch backlit widescreen LCD, a backlit keyboard and iPhone-like 'multi-touch' trackpad.
While it carries two different storage options - a solid state 64GB drive or an 80GB hard drive - it does not feature an optical drive. Those wanting CD and DVD support from their Air will have to pay an extra $159 for a SuperDrive.
Apple also announced that the upgrade for Apple TV is not yet ready for release, but will be available as a free download in 'a week or two'.
