The amount of pig meat being imported into New Zealand concerns Jeff Cooley, of New Zealand Purebred Pig Genetics in Midhirst.
"Do we want a pig industry in New Zealand?
If so, why is no one supporting it?" he says.
In June, 2,300,000kg (3124 tonnes carcass-weight equivalent) of uncooked pork was imported, the equivalent of $10.3 million.
Jeff's concerns stem from the Ministry of Primary Industries readiness to import pork meat with little testing.
