BRUSSELS (AP) The WTA Brussels Open has folded after three years because it became too expensive to stage.
The tennis tournament was a clay-court event in the week before the French Open in late May, and drew top players like Caroline Wozniacki (2011 champion), Agnieszka Radwanska (2012) and Marion Bartoli.
The tournament said in a statement that "the current economic context and the ever-increasing investments to meet the demands of the WTA for the Premier label made it a difficult, near impossible task."
The 2013 edition, which offered $250,000 in prizemoney, was hit by bad spring weather and poor crowds. Kaia Kanepi of Estonia won the only WTA event in Belgium.
It still figures on the WTA schedule for next year.
