New Zealand Tennis is about $20,000 out of pocket from the Davis Cup tie against India in Wellington.
New Zealand lost 4-1 in front of smaller than expected crowds at the Renouf Centre. NZT chief executive Pat O'Rourke said poor weather had deterred fans, which meant gate-takings were down.
"The crowd was definitely affected by the weather," he said.
"If you were going out for an enjoyable day of tennis you would not have gone on probably any of those days because the weather was so unpleasant.
"There was some additional prize money for winning and, if we had been victorious, that could have easily made the difference."
O'Rourke said the loss would be absorbed in the annual Davis Cup budget and would not affect money allocated to player development.
New Zealand's next tie is in February, and O'Rourke said NZT would try to recoup the loss.
"It's a case of swings and roundabouts."
An exact figure on the loss will not be known until final budgets are tallied.
"But it will by no means be the biggest we have had," O'Rourke said.
