Top-seeded Paola Suarez of Argentina beat American Tara Snyder 6-4 6-3 to reach the second round of the ASB Classic tennis tournament in Auckland tonight.
Suarez, making her fourth attempt at the Auckland title, endured a 30-minute rain break before returning for the victory.
Suarez entered the 2003 tournament in Auckland with a tour ranking of 29 and reached the quarterfinals before being beaten by the eventual winner, Greece's Eleni Daniilidou, in a third-set tiebreaker.
After claiming her third career singles title in Vienna, Suarez reached the third rounds of the Australian and French Opens, the fourth round at Wimbledon and the quarterfinals of the US Open.
