Double world champion Sharon Sims from Palmerston North claimed her first national singles bowls title at the women's championships in Dunedin yesterday.
She did it the hard way, coming from behind against none other than Matamata's legendary Millie Khan, before edging out to a 21-17 win.
Earlier in the day she had won her semifinal clash 21-15 over her great friend, Northern clubmate and pairs partner Mary Campbell.
Khan had beaten defending champion Dot Curry of Hamilton City 21-4.
"It's a shame we had to meet in the semi," said Sims.
"But at least it meant one of us was definitely going to make the final."
The singles title is Sims' first, though she won a pairs title with Bev Budd in 1993. In 2000 she won world championship gold in triple and four at the Moama complex in Australia.
The pairs crown was claimed by Jenny Fleming of Motueka and Picton's Sandra Robertson.
They came from behind to beat Barbara McGregor, of the United club in Nelson, playing with Moana Cross, also of the Picton club, shaking hands at 22-15 after 17 of the scheduled 18 ends.
