Top seed G. D. Jones will face another teenager, Kiril Tcherveniachki, in the semifinals of the Auckland tennis championships today after they scored similar wins in last night's quarter-finals.
Jones, 17 and ranked 43 among world juniors, lost just one game in his clash against Martin Colenbrander at the Vodafone Tennis Park while Tcherveniachki, 18 and ranked 46th, beat Richard Cahi 6-0 6-1.
Tcherveniachki was fortunate he did not have to face former professional Lee Radovanovich in his quarter-final after Radovanovich withdrew with a back injury.
The clash between Jones and Tcherveniachki should prove interesting. Jones will be keen to stay ahead of his rival and Tcherveniachki will want to show how he has improved throughout the season.
Auckland teenager Jonathan Hooper almost caused an upset by taking Davis Cup squad member and tournament second seed James Shortall to three sets.
Rain caused the matches to be moved inside and Shortall eventually prevailed over the feisty Hooper.
Canterbury's Daniel King Turner, the tournament fifth seed, beat last year's finalist and fourth seed, Jacob Olsen, in straight sets to make the semifinals where he will play Shortall.
Women's top seed Shelley Stephens cruised into her semifinal with a straight sets win over Lucy Barlow (Waikato) and will play former New Zealand team-mate Tracey O'Connor, who beat talented junior Lucy Cole in straight sets.
