New Zealand won their last two ties but still finished a disappointing fifth at the Asia Oceania group one Fed Cup women's tennis tournament which finished in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
The third-seeded New Zealanders - comprising Marina Erakovic, Sasha Jones and Ellen Barry - lost to 3-0 Japan and 2-1 to Korea before bouncing back with wins over Indonesia and Thailand.
They swept Indonesia 3-0 in their final round-robin tie before pipping Thailand 2-1 in a ranking tie, courtesy of singles wins to Jones and Barry.
Japan beat Chinese Taipei to advance to the world group.
Meanwhile, Erakovic and Jones have travelled on to play a WTA tournament in Pattaya, Thailand.
