The New Zealand women's tennis team produced a mixed bag in the opening stages of the Asia/Oceania Fed Cup competition in Seoul, Korea.
The team recorded a win and a loss, and with the first day's play lost to rain, they had to play two matches yesterday.
The chilly morning session started badly with a 2-0 loss to Chinese Taipei while the temperature never rose above five degrees.
Marina Erakovic was beaten 4-6 6-3 6-0 in the top singles by her 128th ranked opponent Su-Wei Hsieh while Leanne Baker lost to Yung-Jan Chan, who has a ranking of 173 compared to Baker's 373, in straight sets 6-1 6-0.
The ledger was evened when they defeated the Philippines 2-0 with Canterbury's Ellen Barry, 17, making her debut for a 3-6 6-3 6-0 set win.
Baker won her match in straight sets 6-2 6-0.
"It was a very tough day for the team," Erakovic said reflecting on their loss to Chinese Taipei.
"It was disappointing for me as I'm sure it was for Leanne, however we have both taken a lot away from these matches and tomorrow being a new day we will give a 100 per cent and play some good tennis."
The next match is later today against second seeded India who have top-50 player Sania Mirza in their side.
