New Zealand's crop of promising young tennis players had mixed results in the second round of the US Open junior championship in New York yesterday.
After rain forced the players indoors, William Ward recovered from losing the first set to beat his US opponent, Timothy Smyczek, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, but fellow Aucklander GD Jones was soundly beaten by second-seeded German Andreas Beck 2-6, 1-6.
Marina Erakovic reached the third round of the girls singles, beating Russian Regina Kulikova 6-1, 7-5 (7-5).
