Daniel King-Turner made up for his disappointment in missing the Heineken Open by winning the New Zealand lawn tennis championships at Hagley Park, Christchurch, yesterday.
Playing on his home club grass courts, King-Turner beat Wellington's Matthew Prentice 7-6, 7-5 in the final after shutting out New Zealand No.1 Mark Nielsen 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a tough semifinal.
Leading New Zealand female Shelley Stephens was made to work hard for her win in the open women's event. She beat Canterbury's second seed Nikki Tippins 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
