KEY POINTS:
New Zealand tennis player Sacha Jones beat fifth seed Ksenia Pervak 5-7 7-5 6-3 today to move into the third round of the US Open junior championship in New York.
Jones, from Auckland, needed three hours to beat her Russian opponent on the outside courts at the Billie Jean King Tennis Centre.
Jones, had to call on all reserves to beat a difficult opponent who used gamesmanship at every opportunity.
Pervak was given a code violation for time wasting and called for medical treatment on three occasions, mainly when Jones was leading.
"I knew what to expect. I had spoken to a couple of girls in the locker room, I've seen her around for the past 18 months and knew what gamesmanship was coming so I just tried my best to do what I wanted to do," Jones said.
"It was a tough one today, she was a crafty opponent.
"She was left-handed and it took a while to get used to her curving serve.
"Even right until near the end as much as I had momentum it was still a battle."
Jones next plays American Ashley Weinhold who she beat in three sets last year in the third round of the US Open juniors.
Weinhold has a WTA professional ranking of 413 while Jones is 421.
