NEW YORK - Roger Federer edged out Serb Novak Djokovic 7-6 7-6 6-4 to win his fourth successive US Open tennis crown this morning (NZT) and take his grand slam tally to 12.
Third seed Djokovic had five set points in the opening set and two in the second but world number one Federer came out firing when needed and held on to win the title.
Djokovic, bidding to become the first player representing Serbia to win a major, served for the first set at 6-5 and had five set points only to allow Federer to break back and then win the tiebreak 7-4.
The third seed led 4-1 in the second and had two set points on the Federer serve at 6-5, but the top-seeded Swiss hit back to win the tiebreak 7-2 and then broke in the 10th game of the third to clinch victory.
