Sacha Jones won the battle of the two young Kiwi professionals at the US$25,000 Traralgon Challenger event in Australia.
Jones, 15, from Auckland defeated Canterbury's Ellen Barry, 17, in the first round of the tournament 7-5, 6-0.
Jones will now play the fifth seed from Indonesia, Sandy Gumulya, who is ranked at 309. If she wins that match it would set up a potential clash with fellow Kiwi Marina Erakovic who faces Australian Holly Cao in her second round match.
In doubles Erakovic and Australian Emily Hewson lost their first round match to third seeded Australians Lisa D'Amelio and Sophie Ferguson 6-3, 6-3.
Shona Lee and American partner Jodi Kenoyer won their first round doubles over Australians Alenka Hubacek and Benita Milenkiewicz 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 but lost to fourth seeded Indonesians Sandy Gumulua and Lavinia Tananta 7-5, 6-1.
