MELBOURNE - American tennis star and second seed Andy Roddick advanced to the Australian Open quarterfinals with a straight sets victory over Germany's Phillipp Kohlschreiber here today.
Roddick won 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 6-1, the scoreline reflecting the gap in the rankings between the two players.
Kohlschreiber came into the tournament ranked 125th in the world and had earned a place in the third round with the help of an injury to Chilean Nicolas Massu who had to retire from their second round match.
His opponent today, though, was fit and far too strong.
A brief moment in the second set aside, Roddick was untroubled in his march into the last eight.
In todays other men's fourth round matches Australia's third seed Lleyton Hewitt plays Rafael Nadal of Spain, Guillermo Coria plays fellow Argentinian David Nalbandian and Nikolay Davidenko of Russia meets yet another Argentinian Guillermo Canas.
