If Team New Zealand successfully defend the America's Cup in 2003, skipper Dean Barker will hold high a slightly different Auld Mug.
The silverware has just returned from London, where its base was extended for the inscription of future winners.
Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Commodore Peter Taylor said the change was distinctive.
"It looks quite different. They have added a 17cm base to it and if you saw it before, then you will definitely notice a change."
The original cup was a lot smaller, he said.
"They extended it years ago but we used up all that extension and we hadn't inscribed Team New Zealand's last win on it."
The Auld Mug was extended by Asprey & Garrard, on London's Bond St, who created the cup in 1851.
They also fixed it after the hammer attack by Maori activist Benjamin Nathan five years ago.
"On both occasions they have done the work free of charge," said Mr Taylor.
The Auld Mug is on display in the squadron headquarters at Westhaven.
