Team New Zealand's black boat has received a battle-sized boost from one of the world's hot spots. A huge Loyal flag has been flying from the mainmast of the Navy frigate Te Mana as it prepares to patrol the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman looking for terrorists. "We keep as up-to-date as we can on results and we are all barracking for the Kiwis," said Lieutenant Commander Shaun Fogarty.

Speaking of war, fancy an Anzac challenge? Plans by Alinghi boss Ernesto Bertarelli to dump the nationality rules if he wins the America's Cup might have an unexpected spinoff for New Zealand. If the Swiss win, Alinghi, as defenders, could make the sport a free-for-all, abandoning the nationality tradition, which means sailors and designers must live in the country of the team they are representing. Viaduct Harbour chatter suggests if that happens, Australia and New Zealand could join forces to raise money and a crew, and challenge. The proposal is at an early stage, but it is understood the talk is deadly serious that an Anzac effort is logical and viable.

As Russell Coutts and his Alinghi crew loosen New Zealand's grip on the America's Cup, a British newspaper has reported the former Team New Zealand skipper switched to the Swiss because he wanted to set up a team in his own image. "Focused yet fun-loving," the story said. Coutts - fun-loving?

Mr America's Cup, Dennis Conner, already a New Zealand resident, apparently loved his stay in the exotic seaside resort of New Plymouth more than anyone had realised. Conner, 60, has bought a property there. And rumours are growing that the city's other rich and exceedingly famous guest might also be looking to buy. The local newspaper reports Hollywood star Tom Cruise is so taken with his luxury Oakura hideaway he wants to buy it, along with a Taranaki vineyard.
