A row is once again brewing in America's Cup circles, this time about the Auld Mug itself.
Alinghi is angry about a New Zealand plan to auction silver remnants of the original trophy for charity, claiming the pieces do not belong to New Zealand and can not be auctioned for any reason.
In 1997, the America's Cup was damaged badly by a sledgehammer-wielding activist and had to be sent to London for reconstruction. Several parts had to be remade completely, leaving remnants of the original Cup.
Chairman of the Spirit of New Zealand Trust Stephen Fisher has written to Alinghi's Swiss yacht club, which holds the America's Cup, advising them of his group's plans to auction parts that were knocked off the cup.
The Swiss have responded by asking their lawyers to write to the Spirit of New Zealand Trust asking them to drop an idea they view as "tacky".
