The Waikato Chiefs shed their underdog status in Invercargill Saturday evening to overcome the Otago Highlanders 29 – 24.
The victory allows the Chiefs to lift themselves out of the basement near the bottom of the Super 12 table, while match favourites, the Highlanders, remained scorless for the first half with the Chiefs ahead by 10 points.
The Chiefs tries came from Roger Randle (2), Jonno Gibbes and Bruce Reihana. Points for the Highlanders came from Tony Brown, Ryan Nicholas and Paul Steinmetz.
