LONDON - Wendell Sailor has dropped his strongest hint yet that he will switch to rugby union rather than joining a British Super League club at the end of this season.
The 26 year old, Australia's man of the match in November's World Cup final, plans to leave the Brisbane Broncos at the end of next season – something that has inevitably excited interest at English league clubs Leeds and Wigan – but has said that his main target now is to play in rugby union's equivalent tournament in 2003.
"I'd like to play in the 2003 [rugby union] World Cup. Not too many people have done that [played in a league and union World Cup]," said the winger of his cross-code ambitions.
"Whether I am playing rugby league in England or rugby union in Australia, I still haven't decided yet. I still respect rugby league but I have the option of rugby union."
The ACT Brumbies Super 12 side are now favourites to sign Sailor.
"I like the way the Brumbies have got their set-up. I'd like to be coached by Eddie Jones. He reminds me a lot of Wayne Bennett."
