Rugby league star Greg Inglis has formally announced he will contest charges that he assaulted his girlfriend.
The Sunshine Magistrate's Court in suburban Melbourne heard today that a settlement could not be reached in the case and a contested hearing would take place next April.
Police will call two witnesses in their prosecution of Inglis, the court heard.
Inglis, who plays for NRL premiership winners the Melbourne Storm, was in court for the hearing and had his bail extended until April.
It is alleged Inglis assaulted girlfriend Sally Robinson on August 9. He is charged with unlawful assault and recklessly causing injury.
It is expected Inglis will join the Australian team for its tour of England and France next week.
