CHRISTCHURCH - More than big money is at stake in the two feature races at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club meeting at Addington tonight.
Hero, Matai Mackenzie and City Rogue appear to be the top chances in the $160,000 Civic Video Sires' Stakes Final, and each is poised to snare the New Zealand two-year-old pacer of the year title.
The Ted Demmler-trained Tupelo Rose looked to have the New Zealand three-year-old pacing filly of the year title as good as won going into last Friday night's New Zealand Oaks at Addington.
But her defeat, by Caps Off, has opened the door to her rivals.
Caps Off would probably take the title if able to repeat last week's effort, while Dancingonmoonlight, which finished on strongly for third last week, is this season's New South Wales Oaks winner.
Hero, who cruised to victory in last week's $160,000 PGG NZ Yearling Sales race, is drawn to lead again tonight and Ohoka trainer Wayne Ross could not be happier with the son of In The Pocket.
Ross trained Tupelo Rose to take the national two-year-old title last season, and believes Hero will be entitled to the honour this term if he can capitalise on a handy marble again tonight.
